"Challenging incumbents"

"With a newly formed group called the League of RI Businesses openly challenging incumbents with the goal of electing more conservative legislators, there has been a lot of speculation that Ciccone could use his conservative credentials to claim the Senate presidency after the 2026 elections (the general consensus is that he only needs to flip a few seats to make it happen). Who is running with the League of Rhode Island Businesses?

The League of Rhode Island Businesses initially came together in opposition to the "assault weapons" ban, then broadened out into other issues.

The most famous thing the League has done so far is create 40 Political Action Committees for each city and town, plus a statewide PAC, that can each, in theory at least, contribute up to $2,000 to each candidate.

Will RI buck national trends in the 2026 election? A ballot breakdown

In fact, if not for the right-leaning slate funded by the League of Rhode Island Businesses, there would be very few races to campaign for over the next few months.

The new nonpartisan, conservative-leaning campaign group boasts the largest slate of challengers −17 − of any political organization this year and may endorse some of the other candidates who declared for office last month.

The league's unorthodox 40-PAC fundraising strategy has drawn scrutiny but no legal challenges yet and should give the group's candidates plenty of money to run on.
